Freedom of choice, but...
Wearing a helmet is not compulsory in the UK and I wouldn't want it to be.
You certainly won't win any fights with Routemasters, Eddie Stobart, and so on just because you have some polystyrene on your head.
However your fencemaster has an old helmet with a lovely indentation in it from when my head hit a rock after I foolishly went round a corner too fast in Richmond Park.
I still have the scars on my right arm, but no dent in my head. Mind you, I have been obsessed with this fence since then...

Cycle Helmet research
Most of the 'research' into cycle helmets is misleading
and really should be called dishonest advertising.
There is no uncontested evidence that wearing a cycle
helmet actually reduces the chance of serious injury.
The really big danger is that people wearing a helmet
feel safer than otherwise. Virtually all the cyclists
killed in London have been run down by lorries or cars.
Wearing a helmet does nothing to stop this happening to
you.

If you don't wear a helmet (I have forgotten mine on more than one occassion) this site might make you think about it.
